A Sum Rup Tasting Menu at Chao Krung Thai And Thuggish Ruggish Cohen – Here’s What’s Popping Up

Genghis Cohen, the nearly 40-year-old Chinese-American restaurant on Fairfax where everyone goes for Christmas, will bring its Hanukkah ice cream collaboration for the third year running. Owners Marc Rose and Med Abrous of Call Mom teamed up with Konbi on a limited-edition Hanukkah treat –  Thuggish Ruggish Cohen. 

The rugelach-inspired ice cream features milk bread ice cream with chocolate fudge ripple and toasted, salted cracked almonds ($17/pint) and is available now for pick-up orders via ChowNow while supplies last.  

Starting on New Year’s Eve, Saturday, Dec. 31, and every third Thursday of each month in 2023, Chef Amanda Maneesilasan at Chao Krung Thai will serve a special Sum Rup tasting menu, inspired by a complete Thai meal that includes several complementary dishes and condiments meant to be shared and eaten with rice.  

Offered via a multi-course pre-fixe ($75pp plus optional wine pairing for $40 – includes four wines), the tasting menu includes new takes on classic Thai dishes like oxtail massaman.

JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, will offer a limited-time culinary series, SAIDO’s Vegan Way | Chef Katsumi Kusumoto Popup. Voted the World’s Best Vegan Restaurant in 2019 by vegan/vegetarian restaurant guide, HappyCow, Tokyo Chef Kusumoto’s SAIDO  will be open for the first two weeks of January 2023 only. The vegan pop-up series will take place the first two weeks in January 2023 (Jan. 6 – Jan. 8 and Jan. 12 – Jan. 15) with two offerings each day – a three-course lunch (monaka salad, saimin noodles, and a vegan cheesecakes) between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and a six-course dinner (monaka salad, seasonal vegetable potage, vegan grilled unagi eel over rice, vegan yakitori skewer, saimin noodles, and vegan cheesecake) between 5:30 p.m and 7:30 p.m. 

Burnin’ Mouth has opened the doors to its newest location at Westfield Valencia Town Center, offering its mind-blowing Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich. The chicken joint sells their sandwiches in levels of heat (1-5) with “INSANE” being the hottest and promises to ‘burn your tongue off.’

If you’re heading out to the desert, there are a few spots left for Bar Cecil’s single- seating, six-course menu with a 9 p.m. East Coast/Times Square salute in Palm Springs.

The New Year’s Eve event includes a welcome reception with drinks and canapés on the terrace, followed by a six-course menu from chef Gabe Woo featuring Regiis Ova caviar, Flashy Trout Heirloom Lettuce, Lasagna Bianca, Pink Champagne Granite, line caught Sea Bass or Venison Loin, and croque en bouche with a Champagne toast for dessert. Limited reservations for the evening are available for $350 per person plus tax and 20% gratuity (prepaid and nonrefundable) and can be made by calling 442-332-3800.
