Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run on El Cerrito Way
GILROY, CA (September 16, 2022) – Wednesday morning, police arrested Derek Shingu in connection with a deadly hit-and-run on Wren Avenue.
The pedestrian collision happened on Monday night, at around 8:54 p.m., near the intersection of Wren Avenue and El Cerrito Way.
According to reports, Shingu, driving a 2020 Jeep Cherokee struck a pedestrian in the area. Upon impact, he fled the scene without rendering aid to the severely injured victim. Due to the extent of their condition, the victim succumbed to their injuries at the scene. However, their identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Gilroy police later identified the driver using statements from several witnesses and a license-plate reader camera system.
Authorities managed to detain 54-year-old Derek Shingu and booked him in Santa Clara County Jail for vehicular manslaughter. Those with further information regarding the Wren Avenue hit-and-run are encouraged to contact Gilroy Officials as soon as possible.
